VEGA Cottage

Island of VEGA

Norway

Erik Kolman Janouch who studied architecture at the Royal Swedish Institute of Technology and at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture and his business partner Victor Boye Julebäk, who studied architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture and at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, have founded the Kolman Boye Architects studio in 2013. Since day one, their main goal has been to develop aesthetic, environmental and culturally sustainable approaches in the art of construction – all inspired by presence and a considered stance. "With our architecture, we therefore try to appeal to not only visual, but also auditory, tactile and olfactory senses. We aspire to mainly make use of natural materials, but are not opposed to them being processed using modern methods" explains the creative duo. Located in the Norwegian archipelago, not far from the polar circle, and nestled in the middle of the wild, magical and untouched Nature of the island of Vega, the contemporary two-level Vega cottage, inspired by traditional Norwegian seaside huts called Naust, is one of their most important projects. It was especially designed for a client whose father spent his childhood in the neighborhood. 'When we designed and built the house on the island of Vega, we were quite young and inexperienced. It was an amazing challenge to take on a place that was so unique. The project is defined by what could be called poetic pragmatism. The house has a tranquil, natural and unpretentious quality. The complexity lives in the encounter between the landscape and the building – between nature and culture. It required meticulous surveys, measurements and a building process that was based entirely on human power to achieve the desired result. It was a challenge, but something we always try to achieve in our current projects'. The Vega cottage, which sits on a rock beneath a granite and perfectly fits with the surrounding spectacular landscape, is resolutely unique thanks to its unpretentious presence and distinctive character. The architects have chosen to develop themes from the vernacular architecture. The few windows with a dominant view towards the sea are large, simple and robust, and the access to the house is given through a narrow natural ravine densely grown with gnarled birch shrubs. Completed in linseed oil painted pine with untreated birch skirting, frames and reveals, the interior is subtle and minimal and looks like it was hand-built. Less is resolutely more. The latter is the perfect place where to enjoy quality time with family, friends each season. The perfect getaway where to reconnect with Mother Earth and enjoy loneliness if you are writing a book or working on something big. Slow architecture is definitely the best choice ever.
