Illy Art Collection by Mona Hatoum
Trieste
Italians don't joke when it comes to coffee. Indeed they take it very seriously. And you know what? they are right. In the Leonardo da Vinci's home country, coffee break is a real ritual with some important rules to respect. Coffee has to smell and taste good. But not only. Please forget to drink it in a cardboard Cup. It has to be served in a lovely porcelain cup. At home or in a caffé. It does really matter. 'The eye wants its part' as we used to say in Italy. Illycaffé S.p.A, the Italian family company founded in 1933 in Trieste and one of the main international coffee producers on the market today, knows it very well. In 1992, Francesco Illy, grandson of the founder, launched the first limited edition Illy Art Collection. The brilliant and creative idea is simple: to offer the opportunity to talented artists to customize the white porcelain cup designed by Italian Architect and Designer Mattheo Thun. After Marina Abramovic, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Louis Bourgeois, Mark Quin, this year, it's up to the multitasking and award-winning Artist, Mona Hatoum. Famous for her installations and sculptures and for being politically engaged, the born in Beirut British with Palestian origin has chosen the symbolic pattern of the Arabic Kefiah- which represents the Palestinian cause she supports- together with fishing nets and olive leaves, symbol of peace. The limited collection, characterised by an amalgamation of shapes and colours, is not only geometrical and arty, it tells a story and is a powerful message of hope and reconnection between peoples. Mrs Hatoum is also the first to have customized the tin of coffee.
