By Hélène Battaglia

Who are you?
Nice to e-meet you. My name is Danilo Giungato and I'm a Apulia-based professional photographer and videomaker.

When exactly was your passion for photography born?
Since I was a child, I have a fascination for photography. When I was about fourth years old, I secretly used to take my parents' camera to shoot. Every time they developed a roll, they discovered pictures I was the author of. Our home was full of magazines and Italian singer-songwriter's records. At that time, I did not know but behind those beautiful covers and glossy pages there was the work of talented Peter Lindbergh, Luigi Ghirri... The true passion was born during my studies at the university and, especially, when I started studying History of Photography.

When did you start taking pictures?
I was eight years old when I captured my first ever full roll using a Kodak Ektralite.

By chance, do you remember what did you first ever shot capture?
I believe it was the picture of a pair of shoes that I loved to wear when I was a child.

When did you realize that you had an undeniable aesthetic sense and were gifted?
I sincerely never consider myself in this way. I use this frame to try to convey to the viewers what I see and to immortalize locations and people.

How did you train to turn yourself into a professional photographer?
My training comes from photo shows. In 2008, I started taking pictures during concerts and theatrical performances. I was lucky to meet talented insiders near and off the stage, such as Pasquale Modica who is the indisputed master of live photography in Italy or University professor Annalisa Savoca and a lot more...I read a lot at this time and I became keen on the lifes of photographers like Maurizio Buscarino. Those human beings taught me all about the job,  how to behave and approach every commissioned work.

What do you love the most capturing?
Architecture and locations (indoor and outdoor) but, of course, also lifestyle and people.

How would you describe the essence of your creative style?
Minimal.

As a freelancer, how is your daily routine?
A typical day of mine includes a part on the field when shootings are planned and another one at home, managing all the work behind: editing, follow-up of the clients (calls, mails...) and research (on the web and book readings).

You are born, raised, and based in Apulia. Why do you think so many people from over the world fall in love with this emblematic Mediterranean and wild area of yours?
From Gargano to Salento, Apulia is a very unique area, full of locations and people to discover. There are some places which became iconic and where everybody is willing to visit. The difficulty stands in being able to discover what is trendy and what, at the contrary, is authentic. If you are planning to visit Apulia, be bold and choose an unconventional tourism, you will not be disappointed at all.

How do you perceive the creative scene in Apulia? Has it changed over the years?
There is surely artistic excitement in Apulia; the truth is there has always been. The beautiful thing regarding the last few years is that, thanks to the increasing flow of tourists, Apulia is most known. More events have been organized and there are more opportunities to see interesting things.

What is the secret of a successful shooting?
Taking good pictures and not chasing the myth of the beautiful picture.

How did you usually get ready for a commissioned shooting?
What really matters is to plan carefullly the whole work with the client: understanding what she/he is looking for, which goal she/he wants to reach and then inserting my personal vision in order to create together the perfect scenary for the shooting.

You are also a skilled videomaker. How different is it from being a photographer?
To me there is no real difference. The two activities are closely related, usefull for each other.

How did you discover Bari-based luxury handcrafted blouse brand VIRTUOSA MUSE?
I discovered the Apulian luxury and eco-conscious blouse brand VIRTUOSA MUSE on Instagram. I really appreciate its minimal and delicate style which is perfectly in line with mine.

Do you enjoy collaborations between creatives, or do you prefer working independently?
Contaminaton is essential when it comes to a creative partnership.

A special and unforgettable shooting to your heart so far?
A shooting with Italian Chef Giorgia Eugenia Goggi from Masseria Moroseta for American Vogue.

To you, what makes a photographer a good one?
I think it is very important to stay discreet, cold and detached to be an impartial witness able to document the most truthful reality possible.

How do you love to spend your free time?
Biking, listening to music, and meeting beautiful people to chat and spend quality time with.
