Merù

Via Solferino

 Milan

Italy

Once upon a time, there was a Sardinian young man named Francesco Mereu who moved to Milan to train at the Scuola di Arti e Mestiere  and become a watchmaker. A talented and creative craftsman who started from scratch in 1959, repairing and restoring antique items and watches  in a little and empty shop with only one chair and a working table- the only furniture he could afford at that moment- located in Via Solferino in the Brera district frequented by artists. A passionate and hard worker artisan, believing in his lucky star who was doing his best every day to make a living from his know-how since the day, his little bottega was by chance and fortunately featuring in a prestigious Italian monthly magazine called 'Bellezza'. He was featured as Francesco il Merù as the Milanese building custodian used to called him. A funny name that was registered and quickly become the name of a successful business story. A new amazing and challenging chapter began.  Francesco started also to sale gold and specialized in gemology after taking a night school class. He then started to design his own unique creations and showcased them in the window displays. Fashion editors working for the main important Italian fashion magazines started to choose his one-of-a-kind jewels, result of a mix of vintage and modern style, for shooting and shopping articles. The representatives of  Milanese chic fell in love with his masterpieces. In the 80's, Merù was a settled and renowned brand. At Christmas, customers waited in line in front of the little shop. Francesco did it. He got his deserved fairytale. Today, in the memory of their beloved father, the second generation of Mereu, his children Bartolomeo and Elisabetta are carrying on the precious heritage they have proudly inherited. With the same passion the founder did. In Milan, the Merù's shop is now a true renowned  institution, a place to visit if you are in town for a few days. A place like no one. A little temple of crasfsmanship and creativity where feeling the perfume of a beautiful vintage atmosphere. Entering, you could easily imagine, Francesco smiling to the clients and working on his table and buiding this beautiful entrepreneurial story to be. Shops like that are to be preserved as there are real pieces of history. A sneak peek of what Milan was once.
